Libraries Have New Hours and New Classes to Help with your New Years Resolutions

Beginning January 2, Mid-Continent Public Library (MCPL) will implement new hours at each of its 31 branches across the metropolitan area, including adding Sunday hours at the three branches that serve south Kansas City:  Blue Ridge, Grandview and Red Bridge.

All three branches will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays.  Saturday hours will switch from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. to 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

This month, the Library will offer a wide variety of programs to help customers tackle their New Year’s resolutions—whether that’s decluttering or learning about new technology.

New Job

Is a new job on your list this year? The Blue Ridge branch is offering a 2-part Tools for Job Seekers class from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, January 16 and 23.  The first session will include resume assistance and tips for filling out online job applications.  The second will include advice on cleaning up online profiles and effective online communication.  Persons may register online at mymcpl.org/events.

Getting Organized

Getting organized is often a resolution for the New Year. Decluttering: Finding Ways to Let Go will be presented at the Raytown Branch, on Tuesday, January 23, at 7 p.m.at 6131 Raytown Rd. Design consultant Lisa Holiman shares a methodology to pack up, donate, and throw away the things that are getting in your way and complicating your life. Registration is required. For adults.

Get Stronger

You can never have enough practice in self-defense. Everyday Self-Defense Techniques will be given at the Grandview Branch, Wednesday, January 10 at 6:30 p.m  off 71 Hwy & Main St. The self-defense class will feature hit-and-run escapes and pressure points. Registration is required.

Computer Help

Are you frustrated with the internet? Have you gotten behind on technology? Get updated this year at Tech Talk. Bring your questions or listen to other’s. Bring your own laptop computer or tablet. Registration required. Blue Ridge Branch, January 17, at 2 p.m.; Grandview Branch, Thursday, January 4 at 2:30 p.m., Monday, January 8 at 7 p.m. and Thursday, January 18 at 2:30 p.m.

Maybe learning the basics of computer use is on your bucket list. Using a Mouse and Keyboard is a 2-hour session at the Grandview Branch on Thursday, January 25 at 2:30 p.m. Using Your iPad for the First Time will be at the Red Bridge Branch on Tuesday, January 9 at 10 a.m. and the Grandview Branch on Thursday, January 11 at 2:30 p.m.

Learn English

If you are reading this you probably don’t need to learn to speak English. But maybe you know someone who does. A two-hour class ESL Conversational English Class will help those in a practical way learn the English language and culture. Registration required. Thursdays at 6:30 at the Blue Ridge Branch.

Planning Long Term Care

The majority of people over age 65 will need some type of long-term care at some point. Learn about long-term care options and how to create a plan to fit your needs. Long-Term Care Planning will be presented at the Red Bridge Branch, January 26 at 10 a.m.
