The Gilded Lily in Martin City has started a Literary Society to promote the love of reading, good food and friendship. In keeping with the shop’s vintage theme, the inaugural selection will be the “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum. The book will be discussed on Tuesday, April 17, at 6:30 pm at  612 E. 135 St. The book, first published in May 1900, was declared “America’s greatest and best loved homegrown fairytale” by The Library of Congress.

Wizard of Oz (1)Owner Debbie Beachner says she started the Literary Society because of her love of reading. “I love to read and just thought it would be a fun evening for all,” she says.  “I chose the book because most people have probably seen the movie, maybe more than once, but maybe haven’t read the book.”

Participants can read the book from any source. The vintage gift shop does not have any for sale.

The evening will include Wizard of Oz themed appetizers and cocktails and souvenirs from the evening..

Beachner says she plans to have the book club meet every six weeks and hopes to include guest facilitators. “So if you have a favorite great read, let me know!” she says.

There is no membership fee. However, an RSVP is requested. Email mygildedlily@hotmail.com for more information.
