Programs for your kids in South Kansas City

You probably don’t have to be told that summer is around the corner and the kids will be out of school. You may appreciate that there are still spots available at a variety of summer camps in the area. We’ve put together a very brief list of camps you might want to check out.

Adventure Camps

Barstow Summer Camp – 11511 State Line Rd. Choose between 4- and 6-week day camps on academics, arts, sports and enrichment for children ages 3–14 beginning May 29. Extended care options are available. 816-277-0445 or barstowschool.org.

Camp Kaleidoscope – Grandview Parks & Recreation at The View Community Center, 13500 Byars Rd. Weekly field trips, swimming, sports, games, crafts, rock wall, special guests. All just $100 a week as needed. Extra charge for swimming lessons. 816-316- 4888, teamsideline.com/grandview.

Campfire Heartland– Held at Camp Lake of the Woods in Swope Park or Maple Wood Community College or Hollis Renewal Center. Campfire is not just for girls anymore. It welcomes everyone with every interest. Each week has a theme and can include fire building, archery, swimming, camp songs, crafts, etc. 816-285-9441, campfireheartland.org.

Hillcrest Community Center, 10401 Hillcrest Rd. Day camp for ages 6-13 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. June 4-Aug. 10. Activities include art projects, games and sports, swimming and field trips. Cost is $80 per week with lunch a snack.  Scholarships are available. 816-513-8560.

KC Police Department and the city sponsor a free five-day youth academy at the South Patrol Campus, 9701 Marion Park Dr. for ages 12-15 on police operations and law enforcement careers. Hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 23-27. Includes lunch and field trips. Limited to 30 youth. 816-234-5404.

Notre Dame de Sion—10631 Wornall Rd. Sports camps, academic courses and college prep workshops for grades 8-12 plus arts, STEM, world languages and wellness/fitness for preK-8 grades beginning June 4. 816-942-3282 or ndsion.edu.

St. Theresa’s Summer Camp, 5600 Main St. Specifically for girls who want to attend specialized sessions for various sports, STEAM, the arts, or acquiring credited courses during the summer.  816-501- 0011 stteresasacademy.org/summercamps

St. Thomas More, 118th & Holmes Rd. Summer Cyclones, May 30-August 3, for K-6th Grade. The theme Travel the World will focus on skill building, arts and crafts, swimming, field trips, nature and more. Contact hope@STMKC.com.

Sports Camps

Riding Camp at the Riding Club at Clanton Performance Horses, 21622 S. Harper Rd., Peculiar, MO. A fun filled week of horses. Learn basic horsemanship, horseback riding, grooming, crafts and games. Rockhurst Hawklet Soccer Camp  at Rockhurst High School, 9301 State Line Rd. The Hawklets have won many state championships and now their coach can make your child a champion player. Integrity Martial Arts Academy, Red Bridge Shopping Center. Two 5-day sessions in June filled with intense, high level training. No martial arts experience necessary. 816-761- 0143, kcintegritykarate.com.

Arts Camps

Cartoon Camp at 9818 Summit St. Aspiring artists meet in cartoonist Ron Wheeler’s studio to learn to draw cartoons with personality, model clay, create comic strips and draw online. Free T-shirt. 816-941- 9221, cartoonworks.com.

Musical Theater Heritage Camp at Crown Center, 2450 Grand Blvd. Some of Kansas City’s most sought-after professional actors lead a variety of musical summer camps for all skill levels for k-12th graders. The Martin City Melodrama Komedy Kidstitute Comedy Camps, 702 Blue Ridge Blvd. in Grandview. Have fun learning how to tell a joke, perform slapstick, throw a cream pie, improvise and more. Three sessions in June. 913-642- 7576, martincitymelodrama.org.

Vacation Bible Schools

Many churches are still in the process of planning their Vacation Bible Schools at time of publication.

First Church of the Nazarene – 11811 State Line Rd. Kanakuk Kamp-Out, July 23-27, for ages 5-12.
