Costs can add up when preparing your children for school. That is why Three Trails Community in Martin City is offering free haircuts on Sunday, August 12, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Robin’s Nest Salon, 13035 Holmes Rd. Sign ups begin at 1:45 p.m.

The services are aimed for students attending Martin City Elementary and Middle School, but organizers say they would not turn away students from other schools districts.

Terry Shane, co-pastor of Three Trails Community, is a full time barber at Robin’s Nest. He will be joined by six other stylists at the salon, including two from Legacy Cutz. A Spanish translator will also be on hand.

“We hope some families will think ‘If I don’t have to pay for four haircuts, then by all means let’s take advantage of this,’” says Shane.

Shane stresses that the hairstylists are versed in all hair types. He says his own clientele at the salon is 40/40/20 in terms of African American/Hispanic/White.

Blake Fortner, pastor at Three Trails which operates out of Martin City Baptist Church, says the free service was chosen as a way to meet a need in the community. “Our goal is to think outside the box, to find a way to meet a need” he says. “That’s our mission.”

Fortner says he likes to help people apply their passion toward the good of the community. “God has a mission for all of us,” he says. “It’s my job to get them there and then get out of the way.”

Shane is appreciative of the stylists who are volunteering their time. “That’s three hours at $60 an hour they are giving away for free,” he says.
