Martin City Melo-Dog-Ma features cast of rescue dogs
By Sue and Travis Reames
“The Great American Melo-Dog-Ma!” has hit the stage, and it lives up to The Martin City Melodrama and Vaudeville Company’s reputation for funny, family-oriented entertainment. Featuring only three human actors, the cast of this original musical includes 9 to 11 senior dogs and 3 “underdogstudy” canines. The most experienced actor of the stage-struck doggies, Charlie, has appeared in more than 14 productions throughout his years. All the dogs are rescues, seniors and special needs.
In keeping with the doggy theme, Artistic Director Jeanne Beechwood calls the small theatre facility located at 702 Blue Ridge Blvd in Grandview their “furever” home. The staff includes Beechwood, Tony Wagner and Andy Morgan. “The Great American Melo-Dog-Ma!” will feature a soap opera style episode of “Dog Hospital,” with Morgan as Nurse Bonnie and Wagner as Dogtor Buster, the hospital Chief of Staff. Obsessed with keeping the rules, Buster brings in a Guard Cat who triggers Nurse Bonnie’s allergies and ultimately reveals her true intentions.
Watch for a rhythmic dance routine of “Pooper Scoopers” and an episode of “Project Dog-way.” The finale will include “Yorkie Doodle Dandy,” “Dog Bless America,” and “You’re a Grand Old Wag.” The script and all titles are heavily sprinkled with canine puns, as are the costumes and décor.
Family fun for all ages can be experienced weekends through June 15. Saturday shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Refreshments are available for purchase. Tickets are $9.99 for adults and $8.50 for children. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 913-642-7576.
