PIAC Requests

By John Sharp

The deadline to submit requests to KCMO’s Public Improvements Advisory Committee (PIAC) to fund neighborhood capital improvement projects such as sidewalks, street widening, stormwater control and park improvements is August 31 unless they are submitted in person at a council district PIAC hearing no later than September 20.

Persons may go online at http://kcmo.gov/piac/ and submit a request online or print off a request form.  They also may call 816-513-8828 or email PIAC@kcmo.org to request that a form be mailed to them.  Completed forms can be mailed to PIAC Administrator, 3rd Floor, City Hall, 414 E. 12th St., KCMO 64106 or submitted at a district PIAC hearing.

The second and last remaining PIAC hearing for the 5th Council District will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 10, in the front building of the South Patrol Police Campus, 9701 Marion Park Dr., and the last remaining hearing for the 6th District will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 12, at Kansas City United Church of Christ, 205 W. 65th St.

As a 6th District PIAC member representing Councilman Kevin McManus, I think it is extremely important for persons submitting funding requests to attend a district PIAC hearing to explain the importance of the capital improvements they want funded even if they have already submitted their request online or via mail.   (The cost of all requests often totals more than ten times the approximately $4.3 million available to fund such requests in each council district.)

It is always helpful if persons can bring pictures illustrating the problem they want to be corrected and if several people appear to express their concerns rather than just one or two individuals.

The PIAC is to submit its recommendations for funding to the City Council no later than January 10, 2020, for the city’s next fiscal year running from May 1, 2020, through April 30, 2021.  The Council almost always approves the recommendations as submitted.
