“It’s the best running course in Kansas City.”

Since 2010, Rock the Parkway has attracted as many as 8000 runners to Ward Parkway, making it south Kansas City’s biggest race.

On August 28th, thousands of participants will again head to the beautifully landscaped parkway to run (or walk)  in either the half marathon or 5K.  The event is a fundraiser for Children’s Mercy.

“Rock the Parkway is everything you want a race to be,” says Troy Fitzgerald, CEO of KC Running Company, organizer of the event. “Beautiful homes. Large trees. Recently resurfaced streets. It’s the best running course in Kansas City.”

The race course travels from 9400 Ward Parkway to 51st St, looping around Loose Park.

The half marathon course heads north from  Burns & McDonnell at 9400 Ward Parkway and wraps around Loose Park, 5200 Wornall Rd, before heading back south on the opposite street. The 5K route wraps around 83rd St.

Residents in the area should be aware of the restricted traffic areas during the race which starts at 7 am and ends by 11 am.

Fitzgerald says there will be a little entertainment along the course, in keeping with the Rock theme. A “good-sized” food spread which includes Hawaiian Bros. will be waiting at the finish line at Burns & McDonnell. Pre-registered participants will receive a medal and t-shirt.

Fees are $39 for 5K participants if registering before August 25 and $42 after that. For the half marathon it is $89 before August 25 and $99 after. To register, visit www.rocktheparkway.com
