Chef Teddy Liberda, owner-pitmaster of Buck Tui BBQ, has organized the Holiday BBQ for Hope Tailgate featuring some of Kansas City’s best craft barbecue. The family-friendly, all ages BBQ and Chiefs watch party event will combine Liberda’s popular Thai-KC -inspired barbecue and samples from vendors Poi-O Mexican Barbecue, Smoak BBQ and Wolfepack BBQ.
In addition to food and drink, barbecue lovers can enjoy the Chiefs-Green Bay Packers game on the big screen, listen to music by DJ Kay-Fãn, shop for barbecue merchandise and more. A raffle will include gift cards from locally owned businesses, Chiefs merchandise and whole briskets from Harp Barbecue.
All proceeds from ticket, raffle and auction sales will benefit Blessings Abound, a nonprofit dedicated to the resale and redistribution of donated items to families in need. The organization supports other nonprofits like Operation Breakthrough and the MLM Holiday Store. Tickets are $50 per person, available at https://www.bucktuibbq.com/bbq-for-hope/
Over the years through both experience and challenges, Liberda has discovered joy in barbecuing. The required patience, methodology, nuanced practices and meal sharing with those around him brings him hope—a hope that he wants to share with Kansas City. Family and culture are blended through these practices, both in personality and recipes.
“I believe that barbecue brings people together,” says Liberda, who intends to make this an annual event. “I’ve discovered joy and hope in the craft of barbecue, and that’s the theme of this fundraiser. Kansas City is a community with a huge heart for helping others, and that’s exactly what this Holiday BBQ for Hope Tailgate is about—people giving other people hope.”
Buck Tui is a Thai term of endearment; a particularly fond way of calling a young chubby boy. It’s what Chef Teddy Liberda has been called by family and friends since he was small. There is a tradition in both Thai cooking and barbecuing of companionship, collaboration, and togetherness; each element working together to create something truly memorable. Working in restaurants around Kansas City for 30 years, Liberda is bringing that familiar calling from his kitchen at home to the kitchen at Buck Tui BBQ.
Buck Tui BBQ brings together the complementary flavors of Northeastern Thai cuisine and Kansas City barbecue. The precision and experience Liberda has honed over years is reflected in uniquely Thai smoking methods as well as authentic ingredients and sauces. With an emphasis on locally sourced ingredients, brisket, and smoked meats, Liberda utilizes traditional Thai techniques to achieve the familiar smokey-salty-sweet barbecue that Kansas Citians love.
