South KC Perspective
By John Sharp
KCMO city councilmembers from the 5th and 6th Districts that together cover all of south Kansas City have been appointed by Mayor Quinton Lucas to important positions for the 2023-2027 council term that began August 1.
Ryana Parks-Shaw, 5th District-in District Councilwoman whose district covers most of the eastern portion of south Kansas City, was appointed to serve as mayor pro tem replacing 6th District-in-District Councilman Kevin McManus who was prohibited by term limits from seeking another term on the council.
Parks-Shaw also was appointed as chair of the Neighborhood Planning & Development Committee that hears most ordinances regarding new development and rezoning.
Andrea Bough, 6th District-at-Large Councilwoman, was appointed as chair of the powerful Finance, Governance & Public Safety Committee and as a member of the Special Committee for Legal Review.
New 5th District-at-Large Councilman Darrell Curls was appointed to the Finance, Governance & Public Safety Committee, and new 6th District-in-District Councilman Johnathan Duncan whose district covers much of the western portion of south Kansas City, was appointed to the Transportation, Infrastructure & Operations Committee.
The city council committees are the same as they were for the 2019-2023 term except the mayor discontinued the Special Committee on Housing Policy.
