What’s new for students at Center School District

The Center School District enters its second year of Racial Equity training for staff, students, and community members.

Center High School – This year the Center School District will introduce a new career study for its Real World Learning program at Center High School. In partnership with the Kansas City Police Department and Kansas City Fire Department,  career exploration courses will be offered in First Responder jobs. The course will also be open to students from the Real World Learning regional partner schools at Grandview and Ruskin.

Elementary Schools – Red Bridge and Indian Creek elementary schools are entering their second year working with world-renowned expert on math instruction, Greg Tang. His learning techniques are proven to significantly improve math learning for elementary students.

Center hosted a panel discussion on Improving Racial Equity for Black and Brown Boys and Men moderated by Cornell Ellis (right) introduced by Superintendent Yolanda Cargile.

Staff – Thanks to support from the Kauffman Foundation and North American Savings Bank, the Center School District enters its second year of Racial Equity training for staff, students, and community members. Led by Educational Equity Consultants, the training uses an intensive cohort model to help participants understand racism and its impact at a deeper level. Reviews from the participants in the first three cohorts have been positive.

Parents – A key initiative this year is to help parents get more effectively involved in support of their children’s learning. The district will be offering training for families in trauma informed care so that they can have the same understanding and skills that staff have developed over the last three years of training. In addition, the district is starting a new program called Yellowjacket Ambassadors where Center parents will help teach other parents tools and techniques to effectively support student learning in the home.
