I would like to thank U.S. Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, KCMO Mayor Quinton Lucas, numerous other public officials and scores of area residents who attended the February 24 event at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum celebrating my 80 years of life and over 50 years of service to south Kansas City as an elected official and community volunteer.
Supporters donated nearly $5,000 for a scholarship in my name given annually by the Hickman Mills Educational Foundation to a Ruskin High School senior involved in student government or volunteer service to the community.
As a Board member of the Foundation I have participated in interviewing scholarship applicants, many of whom are the first in their families to attend college. I am always impressed with how these students are able to overcome often tough circumstances and still maintain good grades and give back to the community through their volunteer work.
Anyone who would like to donate to the scholarship can still write a check to the Hickman Mills Educational Foundation, put John Sharp Scholarship on the memo line and mail it to the Foundation at 5401 E. 103rd St., KCMO 64137.
