The second spring cleanup in the 5th Council District on June 29 that was open to all city residents for no charge attracted well over 200 vehicles at both of the two south Kansas City drop-off sites at Ruskin High School and the Center Academy for Success.

Both sites accepted bulky items such as old furniture, leaves & brush including recent storm debris, tires and trash, and the Ruskin High School site which attracted the most people also accepted hard to dispose of household hazardous waste such as automotive products, household cleaning products, lawn & garden products and paint.

At Ruskin where I volunteered, vehicles began lining up a little before 7 a.m. for the cleanup that opened at 8, and one person even left his trailer full of trash on the street right by the entrance much earlier to preserve his first place in line.  Several persons made multiple trips to the drop-off sites, and many persons had pickup trucks and trailers full to the brim.  Several persons also rented large box trucks to carry their unwanted items.

Another drop-off for unwanted items at Ruskin is scheduled for July 27 from 8 to noon which will also include accepting household hazardous waste, bulky items, leaves & brush and trash.
