5th District kicks off the City’s fall cleanups

South KC Perspective

By John Sharp

Following a 5th City Council District cleanup Saturday, September 21, with a drop-off site for unwanted items at the Center Academy for Success at 8434 Paseo that took in approximately 12 tons of trash and bulky items, 2 tons of leaves and brush and 930 tires, there will be three more Saturday cleanups in October impacting south Kansas City.

Great KC Cleanup

The citywide Great KC Cleanup will be Saturday, October 5, and groups and individuals that want to volunteer that morning should go online to kcmo.gov/cleanup by Monday, September 30, to register.

Groups that want to create their own cleanup October 5 in an area of their choosing such as their neighborhood should click on “Create your group” and describe the area where they will be picking up trash and litter, where they will leave their full trash bags for city crews to pick up by noon, how many blue trash bags they will need and how many free compost buckets for kitchen scraps they would like from the city for participating.  After their form is processed, groups will be informed where they can pick up their trash bags.

Individuals or groups that want to volunteer to help with a scheduled cleanup at Swope Park from 9 to 10:30 a.m. October 5 should click on “Sign up as a volunteer” to register.  Volunteers will gather that day at the Swope Interpretive Center near the west entrance of the park.

5th Council District drop-off sites

On Saturday, October 12, there will be four 5th Council District drop-off sites operated by the Public Works Department that will be open from 8 a.m. to noon for all KCMO residents.  Each will accept slightly different types of items.

The site at the east parking lot of Ruskin High School, 7000 E. 111th St., will accept the greatest variety of items since it will accept most electronics, although there are fees for some items.  It will accept leaves and brush, tires with or without rims and trash and bulky items such as old furniture and will also offer on-site shredding.

Electronics it will accept for no charge include appliances under 10 pounds or smaller than 14 inches by 14 inches by 14 inches with no food waste, computers and networking equipment, home audio/video and gaming equipment, office equipment, photography and lighting equipment and power tools.

There will be a $5 charge for CRT computer monitors, a $20 charge for LCD, LED and plasma flat screen TVs, a $30 charge for CRT TVs and a $50 charge for big screen, console and projection TVs.

The site at the Center Academy for Success, 8434 Paseo, will accept leaves and brush, tires and trash and bulky items and also will provide on-site shredding.

The site at Southeast High School, 3500 E. Meyer Blvd., will accept leaves and brush, tires and trash and bulky items, and the site at 3001 E. 81st St. will only accept leaves and brush and trash and bulky items.

6th Council District drop-off sites

On Saturday, October 19, there will be two 6th Council District drop-off sites operated by the Public Works Department that will be open from 8 a.m. to noon for all KCMO residents.  The sites are at First Baptist Church of Kansas City, 100 W. Red Bridge Rd., and at South Broadland Presbyterian Church, 7850 Holmes Rd.

Both sites will accept leaves and brush, tires and trash and bulky items and also offer on-site shredding.  They will accept the same types of electronics with the same charges for certain types of electronics as the site at Ruskin High School.
