When people hear the term puppy love it reminds them of the infatuation of a young people with their new owner. The term originated from the 19th century about a boy and his dog. Dolly Parton wrote a song about puppy love when she was 13. Paul Anka wrote Puppy Love in 1960 for the Mouseketeer Annette Funicello. Several films have captured the same title with stories of love and romance.

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than a fundraiser for the Arts Asylum and adoptable puppies? This one night only event will be hosted by Jessica Alcorn and Matthew McGaugh. These entertainers are frequent performers on the Arts Asylum stage. With aspirations of starting a new cabaret series at the Arts Asylum Jessica and Matthew came up with the concept.

The cabaret, Puppy Love, will feature several artists in the Kansas City area including Kameron Cole, Gabriel Van-Dyne, Amari Lewis, Hew McKoy, Austin Skibbie, Ryan Tucker, Nick Uthoff, Aggie Williams and ZAVA. Live musical accompaniment with guitar and keyboard will feature Eryn Bates Mike Terlouw and performer Nick Uthoff as well. Even the hosts Jessica and Matthew are singing in this cabaret celebrating love. Some of the song selections include, Dog Days Are Over, Lady is a Tramp, Times Like This and even original music too.

“This cabaret fundraiser for the Arts Asylum promotes all kinds of love,” says Alcorn. Her co-host McGaugh adds, “We want to welcome everyone to the Arts Asylum where it is a safe space to create art and experiences.”

This fun event will also feature activities for VIP ticket holders including a photo booth, Floral Boom Bar, Valentine Craft Corner and sweet treat bar.

Melissa’s Second Chances animal rescue are bringing puppies to adopt. There will be raffle prizes for the audience. Anyone who would like to bring dog donations–leashes, dog collars, blankets or toys– for Melissa’s Second Chances are encouraged to do so.
