Armed Forces Day Leawood
Large, noisy and powerful, the Huey helicopter was an icon of the Vietnam War. A 1966 Huey that served thousands of troops overseas and survived damage from gunfire and explosives will be on display Saturday, May 17 at Leawood City Hall, 4800 Town Center Dr. Visitors are welcome to step inside the helicopter and chat with veterans.
There also will be a 1950s-era Korean War jeep and other military artifacts. The event is both a celebration of Armed Forces Day, which occurs every third Saturday in May, and a kickoff to raise funds for the new Leawood Veterans Memorial in the courtyard south of city hall.
The American Legion Band will play music beginning at 9:15 am, followed by the Leawood Color Guard. After a series of short talks, the band will resume playing until the event ends at 11 am. The Lions Club will provide water, coffee and donuts.
The Leawood Veterans Memorial will be funded entirely by private donations and will honor all those who have served, from Civil War homesteaders and WWII service members to those who have served in conflicts and missions since. Today, Leawood is home to nearly 1,500 veterans.
The Huey helicopter (#66-00970) is being brought by the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 243. The Korean War-era jeep is being displayed by Jeff Barthol of the Kansas City Military Collectors Club. The event is free and open to the public. See more at leawoodveteransmemorial.org.

Dance along with Pinnacle Winds at May 18 concert
Kansas City’s professional concert band, Pinnacle Winds, will perform “Gotta Dance” on Sunday, May 18 from 2 to 3:30 pm at the First Church of the Nazarene, 11811 State Line Road.
The performance features songs by Gershwin, Rossini and more danceable favorites, along with music from Kansas City’s own Tim Brewer whose “Three River Scenes for Wind Ensemble” will feature local favorites the Doug Talley Jazz Quartet.
“It’s nice to have a reason to dance,” said conductor Dr. John C. Carmichael. “We all probably need to dance more, especially lately.”
This is the third performance in the band’s fifth season. Pinnace Winds formed in 2021 and is made up of 53 musicians.
Carmichael’s dream is to become the first full-time, non-military concert band in America in this century.
“These are very talented people. Many of them have put in their 10,000 hours, to quote Malcolm Gladwell’s Tipping Point,” said Carmichael. “Yet there are no jobs for wonderfully trained musicians.”Tickets for the May 18 concert are $20 for adults and $10 for students or seniors.
