120 Speed Humps Coming to Kansas City

Kansas City Council has approved a new resolution directing the installation of at least 120 speed humps in neighborhoods across the city in 2025. The initiative advances Kansas City’s Vision Zero goals by slowing traffic, protecting pedestrians, and creating safer, more livable communities.

This builds on the City’s 2024 effort, which saw 100 speed humps installed. With this new resolution, Public Works is raising that commitment—bringing at least 120 more speed humps to high-priority areas identified through crash data, speeding trends, and resident feedback.

“I applaud the efforts of our Public Works staff to promote safety in our city streets,” said City Manager Mario Vasquez. “This is an on-going request from our residents and I’m pleased that we can be responsive”.

The resolution comes with no additional fiscal impact beyond 2025. Funding will come from existing resources, including the City’s Vision Zero funds and support from the Public Improvements Advisory Committee (PIAC).

“Traffic safety is a top concern,” said Michael Shaw, Director of Public Works. “By planning for these speed humps now, we’re preparing to deliver real solutions in 2025 that slow down traffic and save lives.”
