An October 29 fire damaged the Help Humane No Kill Shelter in Belton.

No humans or animals were harmed, and the more than 60 cats and two dogs in the shelter were removed to safe locations.

The Belton Fire Department reported to 17122 Bel Ray Pl in Belton, assisted by South Metro, West Peculiar and Grandview Fire Departments, and found the building walls and roof on fire.

According to Belton Assistant Fire Marshal Jason Oakley, the accidental fire was caused by electrical issues involving a heating element. One of the eight rooms was destroyed.

Shelter cats were placed in foster homes and sent to Wayside Waifs. Belton Animal Clinic and Exotic Care Center is providing care for animals with special medical needs.

Director Cyndi Dill created a wish list of items to replace the ruined supplies, such as linens, cat trees and beds. The items can be new or used, and can be dropped off at Belton Animal Clinic.

“We understand these are tough times that everyone is living in, so anything is super appreciated,” said Dill.

The building was deemed safe to re-enter on November 11. Dill and her team face cleanup and restoration work and welcome support from volunteers and foster families..

To date, a community GoFundMe page had raised $10,726 of its $15,000 goal toward renovation work at the shelter.
