DESCRIPTION:The Road to Independence Speaker Series\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Leawood Historic Commission is pleased to present a series of presentations about the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence. The series will begin in March and continue on the final Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. through July: March 28\, April 25\, May 30\, June 27\, July 25. A speaker will present a different topic about the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence at Leawood City Hall in the Oak Room. \nThe series continues with a presentation on June 27th by Stephen L. Kling Jr. on “The American Revolutionary War in the West”\,” focusing on the British attack on Spanish St. Louis and American-held Cahokia in 1780. Mr. Kling will explain how the American Revolutionary War\, which began in the Thirteen Colonies\, quickly became a far-reaching conflict fought across the globe\, eventually involving France and Spain. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe war spilled into the areas west of the Thirteen Colonies and along the Mississippi River\, and the resulting battles and attacks impacted the future development and expansion of the United States. The western areas also contained a rather unique collection of diverse groups and interests. \nThese interests included French-heritage inhabitants living along the Mississippi River\, the new Spanish owners of the Louisiana Territory\, the British masters of the east side of the Mississippi River\, the Americans who conquered much of the east side of the Mississippi River from the British\, the Native Americans who were often (but not exclusively) allied with the British and were involved in almost every military action in the west\, and both free and enslaved black people who participated in several conflicts (sometimes voluntarily and often involuntarily). \nSteve Kling is a practicing attorney who has an MS in finance and a JD from St. Louis University. Besides being an active military history researcher\, Kling is a descendant of Joseph Robidoux\, who was in the Spanish militia at St. Louis when it was attacked by the British in 1780.
