Need to escape the cold? Warming centers and shelters open up during snow storm

With businesses and libraries closed during today’s snow storm, few options are available for those needing to escape the cold. Still, warming centers are being set up during the day Tuesday.  For those needing more than a daytime shelter, Kansas City will have 400 beds available primarily in the midtown and downtown area. No warming centers or shelters are available in south Kansas City.

Warming Centers

In Kansas City, the following community centers will be open, Tuesday, January 9, from 8am to 6pm.

  • Gregg/Klice Community Center, 1600 E. 17 St. KCMO
  • Line Creek Community Center, 5940 NE Waukomis Dr., KCMO
  • Southeast Community Center, 4201 E. 63 St., KCMO

Cleaver Family YMCA, 7000 Troost, KCMO will open at 11 am. 816-285-9622

In Belton, the police station at 7001 E 163 St. is opening their facility as a temporary warming center on Tuesday.

Overnight Shelter

Kansas City has over 400 beds available at different shelters for those experiencing houselessness during frigid conditions.  Individuals must first report at one of four access centers before being referred to an overnight shelter (referral center). This process allows staff to determine which shelters still have availability and meet the needs of the individual or family.
