Kansas City residents will begin getting city lidded and wheeled trash carts delivered in May, and the citywide delivery of about 170,000 of them should be completed by the end of September as part of the new city program to furnish the carts throughout the city.
Michael Shaw, director of the City Public Works Department, said in an interview residents of the city’s south collection zone for leaves & brush, recycling and trash should expect to get their trash carts in May if they have Friday trash and recycling service.
South KC households with Thursday, Wednesday, Tuesday and Monday service should get theirs in June, July, August and September in that order.
Shaw said the 65-gallon carts which are the same size as recycling carts should hold up to about five bags of trash which should save many households money since now residents must buy $2.50 trash tags to put on their trash bags whenever they have more than two bags of trash.
The carts also should prevent animals from ripping open trash bags to get to food scraps left in plastic bags sitting on the ground that is a recurrent problem in many neighborhoods. I never put my trash out the night before my collection day due to problems I’ve had with raccoons or loose dogs ripping the bags open to get food scraps.
Persons with physical disabilities that prevent them from safely taking the wheeled carts curbside may get a form from their doctor certifying that, and city crews then will collect the trash from by their front or garage doors or by their porch.
The trash carts will be identical to the recycling carts, but they will have different color lids with instructions on the lids with all the rules concerning trash collection. Persons may scan a QR code on the lid to see the instructions in the languages used on their cell phones.

5 bags if you use small bags. 40 lb limit I use 55 gal bags – 2 should fit , no more
I don’t have a disability. My issue is I live by myself (75-1/2 years old, female) and have a hill. So to be able to get the containers down the driveway will be a real chore let alone to get them back up especially when there is ice, snow, rain, etc. Can I leave them at the bottom of driveway everyday and drive my suv with trash/recyclables down to put in containers? Who can I contact to see if possible? Any help, I would appreciate. I personally love the idea of the containers, but, as mentioned that is a problem for me.
