Center Board member resigns

District residents interested in being appointed to fill the vacancy must file no later than 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 6.

Sam Cook, a member of the Center School District Board of Education, has submitted his resignation which was accepted by the board at its April 22 meeting.

“I wish the district and board all the best, and I am sure they will make the decisions that are best for the students,” he said in a written statement to the Telegraph. Cook cited time commitment and internal dynamics with the board as his reasons for stepping away from the position. Cook has spent a career involved in youth organizations as a development director, including his current position with Gordon Parks Elementary School. He and his family live in the Center School District where his daughter attends Barstow Elementary School.

Cook served as Board Vice-President in 2022 and 2023 and stepped in as Board President in October 2023. At the April 22 meeting, Ira Boydston IV was elected Board President.

Cook was elected in 2020 for a three-year post and re-elected in 2023. There are two years left in his term.

District residents interested in being appointed to fill the vacancy must file with Stephanie Archie, board secretary, no later than 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 6.  She can be contacted online at sarchie@center.k12.mo.us or by phone at 816-349-3310.

The board will interview candidates and appoint a new member to serve until next April’s election when someone will be elected to a one-year term to complete Cook’s term in office.
