Vehicles had already started lining up before 7 a.m. to enter the Ruskin High School drop-off site (where I volunteered) to properly dispose of unwanted items during the 5th Council District spring cleanup from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday May 18 which was open to all city residents.
City officials reported that a little over 45 tons of trash and bulky items such as old furniture were collected at the cleanup’s four drop-off sites, plus almost 5 tons of leaves, brush and other yard waste.
A total of 1,570 tires, with and without rims, were brought in for disposal, and about 3 tons of documents were brought in for on-site shredding. Electronics also were accepted at two of the sites, but there were charges for accepting televisions and CRT computer monitors.
Altogether, the four drop-off sites served residents in about 800 cars and trucks, some of whom came back multiple times, and some of which were pulling trailers.
About 250 vehicles utilized the Ruskin High School and Center Academy for Success sites which both accepted bulky items & trash, leaves & brush, tires and electronics and also offered on-site shredding. About 200 vehicles utilized the Southeast High School site which only accepted bulky items & trash, leaves & brush and tires, and only about 100 utilized the drop-of site at 3001 E. 81st St. which just accepted bulky items & trash and leaves & brush.
The cleanup was conducted by the KCMO Public Works Department and was sponsored by 5th District City Councilmembers Darrell Curls and Ryana Parks-Shaw.
Unfortunately, miscommunication resulted in the truck that was supposed to be at Ruskin High School to accept household hazardous waste such as automotive and lawn & garden products, household cleaners and paint did not show up, and such items were only accepted that day at a site on E. Truman Rd.
Other opportunities for household hazardous waste drop-offs will be available this summer and will be publicized in this paper.
