Chiefs linebacker holds free football camp for kids

“I want to show them what’s possible if you’re willing to work hard, and hopefully inspire them to do great things on and off the field.”

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Darius Harris is helping bring a free one day football camp experience to local kids, and the event organizer, Sherrie Handrinos, tells the Telegraph that about half the spots are still open for signups. The Saturday, June 15th event will take place at University Academy, 6801 Holmes Rd.

Harris, now armed with three Super Bowl rings, promises to bring a number of “surprise” guests to appear at and help run the Darius Harris Youth Football Camp (designed for youngsters only, ages 7-14). Handrinos says they’ll announce the surprise figures as the date gets closer, but hints that there will be well known NFL players and coaches involved.

The 6’2”, 238-lb linebacker from Middle Tennessee State promises that the event will focus on fitness and fun, rather than a full contact NFL-caliber workout. Although parents are advised to have their children ready for a hot outdoor workout, they can rest easy knowing the little ones won’t be suited up. “This is about kids coming out and having fun, meeting NFL players, and having their questions answered,” Harris said. “It’s about helping them reach their goals and aspirations. It’s something I’ve been wanting to do in past years in order to give back to Kansas City.”

Harris and Handrinos warn that they have to cap the camp experience at 200 kids, so all interested parties should sign up online as soon as possible.

Starting at 8 am, camp participants will spend the morning learning from Harris and a team of experienced football coaches as they are guided through various drills, training exercises, and friendly competitions. The one-time undrafted free agent says the camp’s focus is not only on enhancing football skills but also on promoting important values such as discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

“It’s about showing the kids my passion for the game,” Harris said. “I want to show them what’s possible if you’re willing to work hard, and hopefully inspire them to do great things on and off the field.”

The camp will wrap up at 1pm, with all campers receiving a free lunch, t-shirt, and backpack with gifts inside to take home.
