Area High Schools Wrap Up Spring Sports Seasons

Soccer, tennis, track and field, and golf had champions from a variety of private and public schools in south Kansas City, with Notre Dame de Sion topping the list off as state soccer champions.

Notre Dame de Sion’s soccer team won the MSHSAA state championship.

Girls Soccer

Notre Dame de Sion closed out their 2024 soccer season on June 1 with a 3-1 win over Jefferson City Helias to win the Class 2 state championship title. Led by sophomore Mia Herbert, who scored two goals in the championship match, the Storm captured their fourth state soccer title. Sion advanced to the state title match by defeating Whitfield Academy 2-0 in the semifinals, finishing the season 15-7-1.

Girls Track and Field

The Notre Dame de Sion track team finished their season two weeks earlier with a ninth-place finish at the Class 3 state championship meet in Jefferson City. The Storm was led by senior Emerson Shelton, who won the 400 meter dash and finished seventh in the 200 meter dash. The Sion 4×200 meter relay team finished third in a new school record time of 1:44.96, and the 4×400 meter relay team also finished third. 

Lutheran High School finished ninth in the Class 1 state championship meet, led by Addison Grossenbacher who finished third in the 100 meter dash, and second in the 200 meter and the 400 meter dash. Caroline Linderman finished seventh in the 3200 meter run for the Lady Knights.

The Grandview Bulldogs girls track team finished 17th in the Class 4 state track championships, led by Jordin McGee who finished second in the long jump, second in the 100 meter hurdles, and sixth in the 100 meter dash.

  Bella Scherfenberg, a sophomore from Belton High School finished sixth in the Class 5 javelin throw. 

Zoey Hrabe, a senior from Barstow High School, finished second in the Class 2 pole vault.

Boys Track and Field

The Rockhurst Hawklets track team also enjoyed success at the state championships, bringing home a fourth-place finish in Class 5. They were led by Leo Faulkner, the 400 meter state champion, Andrew Davis, the 800 meter state champion in a state record time of 1:52.38 and Henry Acorn, the 1600 meter state champion, who also set a new state record with a time of 4:06.31.

It was the first time since 1937 that a team had three different individual state champions in the 400 meters, 800 meters and 1600 meters.  The Hawklets 4×800 meter relay team also won the state championship, running the second fastest time in Missouri high school history, and their 4×400 meter relay team finished fourth.

Grandview High School finished 16th in the Class 4 track and field championships, led by Derek Joiner, who won the state shot put championship by more than 3 feet over his closest competitor and finished seventh in the discus throw. Teammate Anthony Tabron finished fifth in the shot put.

Xavier Byers finished 3rd in the high jump for Center High School in the Class 4 championships.  

Giovanni Jones finished fourth in the 100 meters and Preston Black finished seventh in the 300 meter hurdles for Ruskin High School in the Class 5 championship meet.

Barstow’s Tyler McNeive won the Crossroads Conference Golf Tournament on April 29 with David Williams and Dylan Markey named to the All-Conference Team.

Boys Golf

Rockhurst’s golf team finished fourth at the Class 5 state golf tournament in New Bloomfield, led by Alex Hogan, who finished fifteenth individually, and Blake Hartner, who finished 20th

Barstow High School finished sixth in the Class 3 tournament, led by Tyler McNeive, who finished ninth individually, and Paranjay Sharma, who finished 31st.

Rockhurst junior Bobby King won the MSHSAA Class 3 tennis singles State Championship.

Boys Tennis

The Rockhurst tennis team captured third place at the Class 3 state tennis tournament in Springfield on May 25. The Hawklets were defeated by the ultimate state champion, Pembroke Hill, in the state semifinals but rebounded to defeat Francis Howell in the third-place match. Robert King won the individual state championship, not losing a single set in any of his four state tournament matches.
