Free vaccinations and health screenings with a limited number of incentive payments for participating offered on a first-come first-served basis will be available at a free health fair from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 21, at Holmeswood Baptist Church, 9700 Holmes Rd., sponsored by Hickman Mills United Neighborhoods.
COVID-19 Pfizer vaccinations for those 5 years old and up and Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 booster shots will be offered, as well as HPV vaccinations to prevent certain types of cancer for those 9 years old and up. A parent or guardian must be present to provide consent for youth from 5 to 17 years of age.
Dental screenings with giveaways of toothbrushes and other self-care supplies and referrals for free dental care at the University of Missouri Kansas City dental school will be available.
Other screening will include blood sugar and A1C testing for type 2 diabetes for those 18 years of age and up, blood pressure checks and screening for those at risk of high blood pressure, cancer screening and education about ways to lower the risk of developing many common cancers and confidential screening for sexually transmitted infections.
For those concerned about the health risks of tobacco use, trained professionals will give tips on quitting and provide resources to help.
Besides UMKC, the other institutions providing screenings and educational services at the fair include University Health and Children’s Mercy Kansas City. Funding for the health fair is provided by Jackson County.
