Voting is the foundation of a democracy and therefore every citizen’s right. Protecting that right is the primary mission of the League of Women Voters, a national, nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit established in 1920.
The League of Women Voters of Kansas City/Jackson, Clay, and Platte Counties (LWVKC), will be out in force to help people register to vote on Sept. 17. That’s National Voter Registration Day, which is a part of National Voter Registration Week, a coast-to-coast effort to register voters and help citizens prepare to vote.
“We’ll be signing up voters at Penn Valley College’s Campus Center (3201 SW Trafficway, Kansas City, MO), and Longview Community College from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We’ll also be registering voters at several bus stops, meeting people where they are,” Calvert said.
Volunteers will be at the following bus stop locations from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17 :
31st & Prospect
31st & Troost
39th & Troost
And these community colleges:
Longview Community College
Penn Valley Community College
Although a voter registration “holiday” is a prime time to sign up, registering to vote is an everyday opportunity for citizens.
“We register voters throughout the year,” Becky Yockey, LWVKC voter registration chair, said. “We go to the KCMO City Market, area colleges, new citizen ceremonies, and we’re always looking for people to join us and help register new voters,” she said. “It’s a tremendous, powerful feeling to help U.S. citizens exercise their civil rights.”
LWV offers online voter registration at VOTE411.org, where you can also find voter information, such as upcoming elections, ballot information, and confirm that your registration is active.
Kansas City residents can also register to vote at any Kansas City, Mo., Public Library (kclibrary.org) and at the Kansas City Board of Elections (kceb.org).
