Goodwill of Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas will take over the existing 135,515 square foot Homefield building, located at 5000 Bannister Rd., (west of I-435) and convert it into a multi-purpose building that includes an adult high school as well as outlet center.
Goodwill’s plan would relocate their retail outlet center located at Corrington Ave. in North Kansas City, to approximately 20,000 square feet of the Bannister facility. About 25,000 square feet would be for a new adult high school–the Excel Center of Kansas City–for educating individuals 21 and older. The remainder of the building would be for storage and processing space for both the retail outlet and high school.
The retail outlet center consists of items that have not sold at the 17 Goodwill thrift shops in the Kansas City area, and are sold by the pound at a discounted rate.
The adult high school will be the first Goodwill Excel Center in Kansas City. Classes are geared for adults who have not completed their high school education. The school will accommodate about 250 students each year and will include child care on the premises.
Most construction will occur within the walls of the facility. A pedestrian walkway will be constructed from the sidewalk along Bannister Road to the outlet entrance, thus accommodating customers from the nearby bus stop.
The plan was unanimously approved by the City Council on Thursday, September 19.
