Hickman Mills showcases Real-World Learning Center at grand opening event

Hundreds of people gathered on September 30 to celebrate the grand opening of the Real-World Learning Center, Hickman Mill C1 School District’s first new building to open in more than a decade.

The center, located at the former Pinnacle Career Institute, 10307 Hickman Mills Drive, was completely renovated and now houses multiple uses for the district including hands-on learning experiences, staff development space, community space, and a student-run coffee shop that will open to the public in December. The center also houses Burke Academy, the district’s school for children who need nontraditional classroom settings.

Student programs available include skilled trades, biomedical sciences, biotechnology, communication arts, CORE (client connected projects) and entrepreneurship. Students are able to work toward industry recognized credentials and to receive college credit and internships with local businesses. A school of design will launch soon.

Special guests at the event included Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, Representatives Mark Sharp and Anthony Ealy, and City Councilmembers Ryana Parks-Shaw and Darrell Curls.

Superintendent Yaw Obeng thanked Principal Ryan Beatty, the community for its support and reiterated the district’s commitment to graduating students ready to start careers and benefit the local economy.
