In conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week October 6-12, the Kansas City Fire Department is again reminding city residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes and its program to deliver and install smoke alarms for city residents.
“A working smoke alarm can provide crucial alerting and time for families to escape safely during a fire emergency,“ said Assistant Fire Marshal & Battalion Chief Konsta Myrick.
To assure alarms are working properly, KCFD urges persons to install new batteries immediately when the low-battery warning sounds or at least once a year; to press the test button at least once a month to assure the detector is working properly; and to replace smoke alarms when they reach 10 years of age.
To request free smoke alarms for their homes, KCMO residents should call KCFD at 816-513-4648 or go online to http://www.kcmo.gov/fire.
