The KCMO Fire Department, Children’s Mercy Kansas City and the Metropolitan Energy Center are offering free programs to make residences in the city safer, healthier and more energy efficient.

Smoke Alarm Giveaway

As explained at the October 14 meeting of the South Kansas City Alliance, the Fire Department will deliver and install potentially life-saving smoke alarms on request in city residents’ homes.

Fire safety experts recommend installing smoke alarms on every floor of a home and outside bedrooms to quickly alert residents of fires, especially when they are sleeping.

Residents may call KCFD at 816-513-4648 to request alarm delivery and installation.

Free Home Energy Efficiency Kits

The Metropolitan Energy Center will distribute free home energy efficiency kits on request at neighborhood meetings. The kits include LED light bulbs, a high efficiency shower head, faucet aerator and fingertip caulk for around windows.

Distribution of the free kits may be requested by emailing Jacob Moore, building performance coordinator for the Energy Center, at jacob.moore@metroenergy.org.

Free Home Repairs for Air Quality

The Center also promotes Children’s Mercy’s free home repair service to improve air quality for children suffering from asthma and other respiratory diseases as part of its environmental health program. Residents may call 816-302-8565 to request service.
