In the Red Bridge neighborhood, at the intersection of 110th Street and Virginia, stands a striking statue of Hygeia, the Greek goddess of health. The statue was brought to the neighborhood by JC Nichols and is an exact replica of one located at Chequers Estate, the country home of the British Prime Minister.
Over the years, the statue has weathered and been the victim of vandalism. To that end, this fall the Red Bridge Homeowners Association contracted with a local company to have the statue restored for a price of $7,500.
Despite the restoration, attempts to “clothe” the bare-breasted statue have continued, which led the HOA to install warning signs and surveillance cameras.
The HOA fall newsletter states: “Some may think it’s simply a funny prank, but climbing on the statue and tampering with her can cause significant damage to the expensive work being done and it will not be tolerated.”
