11th Annual MLK Walk and Address at Brush Creek on Monday

UPDATE: Due to frigid outdoor conditions, the program has been moved to the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center with a shortened nature walk starting at 10 am.

Heartland Conservation Alliance will host its 11th Annual MLK, Jr. Nature Walk and Keynote Address on Monday, January 20, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The event lasts from 9 am to noon and is free and open to the public, though registration is required.

The event starts with an environmental-justice themed nature walk along Brush Creek, starting at 9:15 am at the “15 and the Mahomies” Playground. The 1.5 mile walk will proceed along Brush Creek to the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center & Museum, 3700 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

Designated nature guides are Nova Clark, a ranger with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge in Kansas; and Erik Stafford, author, historian and founder of the Kansas City Company which provides historical and civil rights tours of the city (as previously featured in the Telegraph).

The walk will make its way to the Bruce R. Watkins Center for refreshments and tours, followed by a presentation from Schylon Kubic with Parson + Associations LLC of final designs for two local projects: the MLK, Jr. Pedestrian Bridge and Bruce R. Watkins Connector Community Park, followed by an address from Glenn North, Director of Inclusive Learning and Creative Impact and Poet-in-Residence at the Kansas City Museum.

Due to expected frigid temperatures, Heartland Conservation Alliance reminds anyone participating in the walk to wear appropriate warm attire and footwear for walking in potentially icy conditions. Hand warmers will be available.

A shuttle service is available from the playground/registration site to the Watkins Center. Those who do not wish to be in the cold are welcome to come directly to the Center for the latter portion of the program.
