The March 15 LINC Chess tournament brought 106 student participants to Center High School to compete in multiple divisions from K-12. Players represented 38 schools (public and private) along with students who are homeschooled.

South schools players fared well: Wade Daniels from Hale Cook placed first in K-2, followed by Red Bridge Elementary’s Praval Parajuli and Beckett Holzschuh. Boone’s Ralphie Olivares and Gary Ll topped the K-5 division, with William Haley-Kragel of Center taking third place. St. Peter’s Michael Jacob took first in the K-8 division, followed by Miles Goodheart of Lincoln Middle (previously Hale Cook).

“Chess is the ultimate strategy and problem-solving game,” said Kenneth Lingelbach who coordinates the chess program. “LINC wants our students using their mind in productive ways. This helps them improve in their school studies, too.”

On April 5 LINC will host an all-girls tournament at Morning Star Youth & Family Life Center, 2525 E. 27th Street. The final tournament of the school year takes place at Hickman Mills Middle School on April 26.

For all tournaments: The first round starts at 9:30 am. A free lunch is served for players and families. Tournaments are open to all youth who know basic chess moves.
