The Hickman Mills GFWC participated in the annual Sophomore Pilgrimage to Jefferson City on April 8 and were joined by fellow Northwest Missouri District attendees.

Every first Tuesday in April since 1934, select Missouri high school sophomores have gathered in Jefferson City for the “Sophomore Pilgrimage,” a chance to tour government buildings, eat lunch with the governor and observe workings of the office of the Secretary of State.

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) of Missouri founded the event to nurture an understanding of state government.

A delegation from the Kansas City area, led by local GFWC clubs, were among 200 students and plus chaperons at this year’s event on April 8.

Hickman Mills GFWC members Dottie Jones and Kathy LaFransen sponsored student Brooklyn from Ray/Pec High School for the pilgrimage.

For decades, GFWC of Hickman Mills has partnered with the Raymore-Peculiar School District to sponsor a student representative. This year’s selected sophomore, Brooklyn, exemplifies strong scholarship, citizenship and leadership values.
