The Missouri Department of Conservation is working with Grandview Animal Control and has confirmed a black bear sighting in the Grandview city limits.
The first report came this morning from a Grandview Police Officer on his way to work at approximately 5:45 near the Taco Bell at the West Outer Road and Main Street. The bear was then spotted near 13th & Skyline where this photo was taken. Animal Control officers immediately reached out to the Department of Conservation and confirmed the bear sighting.
“The bear is not believed to be a danger to the public unless provoked,” said Neighborhood Services Supervisor Amy Nash, “So if you see the bear immediately call 911 so we can contact conservation agents.”
It’s unknown if the bear has cubs, but the Missouri Department of Conservation tells Grandview Animal Control that it’s very unlikely for it to have crossed the interstate. The Missouri Department of Conservation offers the following additional tips for safety:
- If you see the bear, DO NOT APPROACH THE BEAR, call 911
- DO NOT leave food outside
- DO NOT leave trash outside
- Lock dumpsters if possible
- DO NOT leave pets unattended outside
