Geovana and David Teixeira have opened Geo’s Cafe at 3523 E. Red Bridge Rd., in the former Prefix Coffee Shop next to the 24-hour IHOP Prayer Room. It is open to the public.

The cafe offers Brazilian pastries, sandwiches, smoothies, acai bowls, and a variety of coffee and matcha beverages.

Geovana grew up in Goiânia, Brazil where she learned to make pastries. When she moved to London during her college years she became fascinated with coffee. “I learned to bake pastries in Brazil but my approach to coffee is European,” she says.

Geovana moved to the states and opened a bakery in Boston, Mass. which she ran for 21 years. In 2020, she and her husband David moved to the area and opened Geo’s Bakery in Olathe. The couple is currently in the midst of moving that bakery to a former Steak n Shake on Strang Line Road which will also serve as a mini market filled with Brazilian goods.

Other future plans include expanding their business into Florida.

Fortunately, south Kansas City foodies don’t have too far to go for a taste of Brazil.

The most popular item is the Dulce de Leche Brazilian donut, deep fried and filled with a sweet custard. A smaller appetite might enjoy a couple of homemade Brigadiera (truffles) paired with a latte. Items such as cinnamon rolls, cream cheese Danishes, and chocolate croissants will please the North American palette.

A gluten-free favorite is the Brazilian cheese bread, made of tapioca, and often found in the freezer section of grocery stores. Here, they are freshly made.

Among the breakfast sandwiches, the Coxinha, a deep fried chicken croquette, leads the most interesting albeit tasty option. Paninis, ham and cheese stuffed bread and avocado toasts round out the savory menu.

A decadent Belgian-chocolate infused coffee tops the list of various and creative beverages. The coffee beans are from Brazil or Italy.

Geo’s Cafe is open from 6 am to 8 pm every day but Sunday. Learn more at www.instagram.com/geoscafe.
