On August 16, the Missouri Prairie Foundation presented its 2025 Donald M. Christisen Prairie Volunteer of the Year Award to Tom Schroeder of Kansas City.
For decades Schroeder fostered and mentored the Kansas City WildLands Seed Team and helped collect seeds from thousands of native prairie species at Jerry Smith Park and other remnant prairies around the metro.
Schroeder is known for his willingness to train and instruct new volunteers, and his photography of rare plant and pollinator species have advanced conservation efforts in the region.
KC WildLand’s Seed Team hosts workdays at Jerry Smith Park throughout the season. No experience is necessary: Conservation professionals will demonstrate plant identification and seed collection techniques.
