First-ever Mental Illness Awareness Walk comes to Belton

Community invited to learn, get support and hold space for those who suffer from mental illness

Mental health advocates and dozens of local churches are partnering for the first-ever Mental Illness Awareness Walk on September 13.

The 2.2 mile walk starts at 11:30 am at the Believers in Glory in Jesus Christ Church, 100 Main St. in Belton. The walk finishes at the Lord of Love Lutheran Church, 8306 E 171st St., where there will also be vendors, community partners with resources and a skit.

According to data from the National Association of Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year. The free event is suitable for people of all ages to learn about mental health resources and to build compassion for those facing mental health challenges within our community.

A CIT (Crisis Intervention Training) Officer from the Belton Police Department will demonstrate how to administer Narcan for someone who has overdosed. A speaker panel addresses bullying, featuring local resource the Love Misunderstood Institute.

The event is hosted by the NAMI Belton support group, led by Beverly Brewington, along with Mothers on the Move, Justice and Dignity Motorcycle Riders and 45 area churches.
