Belton airpark plans put on hold

The announcement comes prior to the Cass County Commission’s scheduled vote tonight on a special-use permit for the runway and zoning change for the property.

Arrowhead Airpark announced on its Facebook page that it was pausing its plans to build the proposed upscale subdivision with 93 home sites and a 3,000-foot runway on a 160-acre site south of Belton.

“Pressing pause to build a stronger future for Arrowhead Airpark!” reads the post. “Yesterday, we decided to temporarily withdraw our county applications to ensure every detail of this incredible project is perfect. This strategic move allows us to avoid delays and come back with an even stronger plan.”

“Our commitment to bringing this exciting airpark community to Cass County is unwavering! This is just a detour on the path to making it a reality.”

“Stay tuned for what’s next!”

The announcement came prior to the Cass County Commission’s scheduled vote Thursday night on a special-use permit required for the runway and a zoning change from agriculture to single family.  The meeting has been canceled.

A previous meeting held July 23rd was met with over four hours of public testimony, most from nearby neighbors opposing the project. Commissioner Mike Moreland said later that a hearing would be scheduled after the board examined new information, including an engineering study provided by opponents.

Concerns were also raised about migratory birds, water drainage and threats to livestock, including a buffalo herd across the road from the end of the runway.

Arrowhead Airpark was introduced to the public in 2022. The Arrowhead plan called for 50 estate homes that could run upwards of a million dollars and 43 “hanger homes,” essentially an apartment over a hanger. The site is southwest of Belton near 203rd Street and Prospect Avenue.
