Many students are getting more time away from school after the Thanksgiving holidays thanks to today’s snowfall. But making the decision to call off school, have an early dismissal or keep school in session is a difficult call for school administrators.
Snow was expected to begin falling around 9 am, according to the U.S. National Weather Service for Kansas City. But an upper level jet streak pushed snowfall in the area as early as 6 am. Weather forecasters changed their prediction from 1 to 4 inches of snow by the end of day to 2 to 5 inches. By 10 am, 2 inches had been recorded in south Kansas City.
Many schools began announcing early dismissal at 10 am. Here is a list of school decisions:
Kansas City Public Schools
Early Dismissal
- Tier 1 Schools: 10:50 am
- Tier 2 Schools: 11:50 am
- Tier 3 Schools: 12:45 pm
- Early Childhood Centers: 11 – 11:30 am.

Center School District
Early Dismissal
- YELC Pre-K: 12:15 pm
- All Elementary Schools: 1:15 pm
- Center Middle School: 11:55 am
- Center Academy for Success: 12:30 pm
- Center High School: 12:30 pm
Hickman Mills School District
Early Dismissal
- Tier 1: 11 am – (includes Real World Center, Dobbs, Ingels, and Ruskin)
- Tier 2: 11:30 – (includes Freda Markley, Hickman Mills Middle School, Alvin Brooks)
- Tier 3: 12:30 – (includes John Sharp, Ervin, Warford, Compass, Truman, Santa Fe)
Ray-Pec School District
Early Dismissal
Ray-Pec will dismiss secondary students at 1:30 p.m.
Shull Early Childhood and all elementary schools will dismiss at their regular times.
Grandview School District
All schools will dismiss at their regular time; however, after-school activities are cancelled for tonight.
Blue Valley School District
All schools will dismiss at their regular time.
Belton School District
No school due to Professional Development Day.
Private Schools
Private schools, which do not depend on bus transportation, had a mix of closing decisions.
Some schools such as Barstow and Notre Dame de Sion chose not to open.
Others, like Daniel Day Academy and Rockhurst High School, decided to close around 1:30 pm.
Lutheran High School, Calvary Lutheran and St. Thomas More have chosen to remain open.
