Salvation Army Southland Corps seeks holiday help

The Salvation Army Southland Corps has more than 1,500 applications for this year’s children’s Angel Tree campaign.

“Last year we had to cap it at 1,200. Already we know the need is even greater,” said Brenda McCoy with Grandview-based Salvation Army.

Angel Trees can be found at area Wal-Mart stores. Each tag lists a wished-for gift for a local child. Recommended spend is less than $50.

The toys are collected and distributed just before the Christmas holiday, but with the current need so great space has become an issue.

The Southland Corps’ Grandview headquarters at 6111 E. 129th St is too small to store and distribute donated gifts.

“If someone in the area has 4,000 to 5,000 square feet of storage space to lend us through the end of December, we would rush to fill it with toys,” said McCoy.

In addition to Christmas gifts, the Salvation Army operates a food pantry on Tuesday, Wednesdays and Fridays. McCoy says they are always looking for donations of non-perishable foods, particularly protein. They also provide emergency assistance for rent and utilities.

McCoy says they hope to raise $80,000 through this year’s Kettle Campaign. “We have six paid ringers and a number of volunteers, but we need more to work the 14 doors in our service area, Tuesday through Saturday.

Last year’s Kettle Campaign generated $50,000 for the local corps. Folks can still drop coins and cash in the red kettle, or opt to donate online.

“It seems like it will be a pretty big year for the need,” said McCoy.
