Ingels Elementary reaches Top 20 in Burns & McDonnell STEM competition

Winning plan will become a permanent STEM fixture at Science City

On January 14, fourth grade students and teachers at Ingels Elementary School were surprised to find the Battle of the Brains truck outside announcing the school as a Top 20 finalist in the 2025-26 STEM competition.

Burns & McDonnell hosts the annual challenge to develop student-created exhibits for Science City at Union Station. The top 20 schools named will share a combined $157,500 in grants to suppport STEM learning.

Ingels’ proposed exhibit, “Inside Out,” focuses on the human body and how the systems work together. Students created a proposal along with cost estimate, commercial and graphic elements.

The winning project will be revealed on February 4 at Union Station. The team will receive $50,000 grant and a chance to work with Burns & McDonnell and Science City to install a permanent exhibit.

Burns & McDonnell has hosted the Battle of the Brains competition among local schools since 2011. This year’s competition invovled 6,700 students from 48 different school districts.

Ingels Elementary is part of Hickman Mills C-1 Schools and is located at 11600 Food Lane, Kansas City.
