KC Fire Department companies were dispatched to a reported apartment fire in the 8000 block of Campbell at 10:26 a.m. On arrival, crews reported nothing showing from the exterior of a 3-story apartment complex. As they investigated, smoke was found on the 2nd and 3rd floors. A single handline was advanced, and the fire was quickly contained and extinguished. The fire was reported out at 10:35 a.m.
One person was assisted out of the building and then transported by ambulance to a local hospital with smoke inhalation. I do not have information on the demographics or status of this person. A second person was also evaluated for smoke inhalation by ambulance personnel on scene but refused transport to the hospital.
All other searches throughout the structure were performed and came back all clear. Residents were asked to “shelter in place” during the event, as the hallways and stairwells were full of smoke. KCFD companies ventilated the building prior to returning to service.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by KCFD.
In 2020, a fire engulfed a portion of the apartment complex, injuring two people and displacing 30 others. The fire was found to have been intentionally set. Reconstruction of that portion has only recently been completed.
In 2024, a group of tenants sued the owners of the apartment complex for negligence.
