After 17 years of early rising, Allie “Miss Vee” Toney closed her shop Vee’s Sweets & Treats at the end of 2025. The Marlborough Village store fed the neighborhood and beyond with freshly baked pastries, breads and homemade sandwiches.
Before it closed, her accountant Sheree Hudson helped her prepare financial records for interested buyers. It’s then that Hudson got a notion. “After seeing her numbers I thought ‘I might want to buy this business!’” she laughed. As a tax preparer for the past 22 years, Hudson says she’s big on math.
“This is my dream, to have residual income,” she says.
Hudson made an offer and soon Miss Vee’s recipes and the business were hers.
Hudson quit her full-time job with the Hickman Mills School District– “I was stepping out in faith”– and opened The Deli Grind on February 2nd.
It is now her turn to arrive at the store at 4 am to bake glazed donuts, giant apple fritters, pastries, cakes and pie.

Not to be forgotten are oversized bread buns baked fresh for the deli sandwiches–onion, wheat or white. The freshness of the bread combined with meat and cheese sold by the pound and sliced onsite creates the ultimate sandwich experience. The House Special, consisting of turkey, pastrami, salami, lettuce, tomato and pickle is the most popular sandwich. For $13.50, it comes with a bag of chips and a cookie.
For years, Miss Vee maintained a shelf full of convenient grocery items for sale at her bakery. It was a small concession for the neighbors who live in what is considered a food dessert. The nearest grocery story at 85th and Holmes closed six years ago.
Miss Vee’s small grocery market has continued under Hudson’s care. A couple of floor-to-ceiling shelves are filled with items such as sugar, flour, canned goods, snacks, dairy products and toiletries. She plans to expand and customize it over time.

Hudson also plans to continue Vee’s free doughnut offer to students after school as well as the customer punch card for free combos.
Eventually the Deli Grind will be available for delivery through Doordash and Grubhub. .
The Deli Grind, located at 8005 Paseo, is open Monday through Saturday 6 am to 4 pm.
