The air in Kansas City’s historic 18th & Vine Jazz District usually hums with the echoes of jazz legends like Charlie Parker and Count Basie. But on Saturday night, March 7, that familiar hum was replaced by the vibrant, soulful sounds of the next generation as the Grandview High School Jazz Band took the stage.
Performing under the direction of Charles Jake, the student musicians delivered a powerful and polished performance that showcased both technical precision and the spirit of Kansas City’s rich jazz tradition.
The event, sponsored by the TJB Foundation, Inc., was part of the 20th Annual Jazzin’ at the Gem concert that showcased other outstanding high school jazz bands.
In addition to Grandview, the evening featured performances by jazz ensembles from Raymore–Peculiar High School, Sumner Academy High School, and Wyandotte High School.
The program also featured The Comprehensive Arts Institute (CAI), a community arts organization founded in 2011 by Grandview resident James Ward. CAI was established with the mission of providing quality music education and arts programming to youth throughout the community.
Adding another layer of artistic expression to the evening, students from the Creative Writing Class at Paseo Academy of Performing and Fine Arts performed spoken word pieces that celebrated culture, creativity and the influence of jazz.
Parents, alumni, educators, and local jazz enthusiasts filled the theater, transforming the evening into a warm celebration of community, culture and emerging talent.
The event provides young artists with opportunities to perform on historic stages that have shaped the legacy of American jazz.
