Help South Kansas Citians Come In From the Cold

Imagine the fear of facing homelessness during this cold snap–especially if you have a family!

The Telegraph has partnered with the Community Assistance Council (CAC) to help the homeless in south KC with temporary housing. The program, called “In From the Cold” will generate funds to provide temporary hotel rooms for families who have been evicted or are homeless for various reasons. We need your help to make it successful.

There are no homeless shelters in south Kansas City. But there are hotel rooms.

A hotel room can cost a family anywhere from $200 to $300 a week. The costs can be much less or even free when a family applies through an agency such as the CAC. Currently the CAC works with two hotels in south KC; however, both require identification.  “One of the problems we come across is that so few homeless have id’s,” says Rachel Casey, director of the CAC. With the establishment of a larger fund, such as “In from the Cold,” the CAC can find hotels that may not be as strict about identification for this population.

The Telegraph has helped establish “In From the Cold” with a small $1000 donation. We know that is not enough. We need your help. Let’s take care of our own and make it successful. This is, for now, south Kansas City’s only answer to a homeless shelter.

I challenge anyone who reads this to donate $10 to $20. For those who received a stimulus check and still don’t know what to do with it, please consider helping donating it to the cause.

To help, you can donate online or mail checks to CAC In From the Cold, 10901 Blue Ridge Boulevard, Kansas City, MO  64134.

For questions, or if you know someone who needs help, contact Rachel Casey, at rachel.casey@cackc.org, or 816-763-3277 x 103.

On behalf of the Telegraph, the CAC, and the homeless, thank you for your support.
