Emergency crews responded to meet South Patrol officers on a confirmed fatality collision. Preliminary investigation revealed that a red Nissan Versa was stopped for unknown reasons in the #2 lane of eastbound I-435, just east of 103rd Street. The Nissan was rear ended by a white KCFD Ford Explorer that was traveling eastbound in the #2 lane of I-435. As the vehicles came to rest, the Nissan was struck by a white Freightliner truck, tractor, and trailer that was traveling eastbound on I-435. The rear seat passenger of the Nissan was pronounced deceased at the scene. The front seat passenger of the Nissan was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The driver of the Nissan was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Ford was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the Freightliner was uninjured in the collision. The driver of the Nissan and the driver of the Ford are currently in stable condition and the investigation is ongoing. All lanes of eastbound I-435 were closed to traffic at Holmes for approximately four hours. The highway has since been reopened. This is Fatality #’s 22 and 23 compared to #12 at this time last year.
