South Kansas City residents chosen for 70 over 70 honorary

The 70 over 70 Awards Celebration recognizes 70 individuals over 70 years of age in the metropolitan area who are continuing to provide meaningful community leadership through their volunteer efforts.

The south Kansas City/Grandview area was well represented in this year’s sixth biennial class of 70 Over 70 honorees that recognizes 70 individuals over 70 years of age in the metropolitan area who are continuing to provide meaningful community leadership through their volunteer efforts.

The awards program is sponsored by the KC Shepherd’s Center at 9200 Ward Parkway, a non-profit agency that provides integrated care management for adults over 60 through programs such as Meals on Wheels, Adventures in Learning and Senior Companions that are designed to allow older adults to comfortably age in place by reducing food insecurity and increasing social activity.

This year’s honorees who live or have worked in the south Kansas City/Grandview area and a few of their main volunteer activities furnished by the Shepherd’s Center are:

Steve Clurman.

-Steve Clurman who has been an active volunteer in the Meals on Wheels program for many years.

Dr. Carol Cowles.

-Dr. Carol Cowles who volunteers with the Free Hot Soup program that provides nutritious meals for houseless and food-insecure individuals.

Cindy Eubank.

-Cindy Eubank who has volunteered at KC Hospice House for the past 17 years.

Carol Graves.

-Carol Graves who until recently was a longtime volunteer member of the Hickman Mills Board of Education.

Ray Hill.

-Ray Hill who is a retired teacher who has become a national geographic teacher consultant.

Allen Jenks.

-Allen Jenks who is an active member of the Plaza Rotary Club’s Social Justice Committee who works with the Urban Ranger Corps that serves at-risk boys and young men.

Faye Johnson Kendrick.

-Faye Johnson Kendrick who is the founder of D.A.V.E.’s Place, a non-profit community center that recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.

Alice Almolene Miller Kilic.

-Alice Almolene Miller Kilic who has been a volunteer in the Shepherd’s Center Adventures in Learning program for the past eight years.

Nancy Northcutt Coli Lear.

-Nancy Northcutt Coli Lear who is board secretary for Della Lamb Social Services where she helped organize its food pantry.

R.B. Miller III.

-R.B. Miller III who is a practicing attorney who has devoted thousands of hours of pro bono legal work to a variety of civic and charitable causes.

-Bonnaye Mims who is a volunteer member of the Hickman Mills Board of Education and a Board member of the Hickman Mills Educational Foundation that raises money for student scholarships and teacher grants.

Barbara Mueth.

-Barbara Mueth who volunteers with Meals on Wheels and Jewish Family Services food pantry.

Reverend Ken Pegue.

-Reverend Ken Pegue who is senior pastor at Mt. Zion AME Church who makes weekly trips to the Women’s Correctional Facility at Chillicothe to provide spiritual and addiction-recovery counseling.

Steve Roling.

-Steve Roling who is the former president and CEO of the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City who is now involved in a wide variety of volunteer activities in the community.

Carson Ross.

-Carson Ross who is the former longtime mayor of Blue Springs who has received numerous awards for his governmental and volunteer community service.

Howard Sachs.

-Senior U.S. District Court Judge Howard Sachs who has served as Board chair of both the Urban League of Greater Kansas City and the Jewish Community Relations Bureau.

Marylou Turner.

-Marylou Turner who has served as Women’s Committee chair of the UMKC Conservatory’s Student Scholarship & Funding Endowment which has awarded over $600,000 in student scholarships.

Dr. Marjorie Williams.

-Dr. Marjorie Williams who is the former superintendent of the Hickman Mills School District who now volunteers with a variety of organizations such as Teach for America and the Black Archives of Mid-America.

Sabrina Wiltz.

-Sabrina Wiltz who volunteers with the Shepherd’s Center Meals on Wheels program serving as an advocacy ambassador by hosting state and local leaders to ride along on her delivery routes.

Carol & K.B. Winterowd.

-Carol & K.B. Winterowd who both are longtime volunteer neighborhood leaders in south Kansas City.  Carol has served as president of the Center Planning & Development Council since 2006, and K.B. is a member of the South Kansas City Alliance Board.
