The Arts Asylum kicks off its third season at 824 East Meyer Blvd. with Reefer Madness the Musical.
Inspired by the 1936 film of the same name this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in- cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana. This show is highly stylized and offers satirical political commentary.
Korey Childs, Artistic Director of the Arts Asylum, says “It is very important to have conversations about propaganda and the approach to material about cannabis from the last 10 to 20 years to where we are now in 2024.” Of course cannabis is now legal in Missouri, but right across the state line in Kansas, no.
This event is sponsored by Besame Wellness as part of the Arts Asylum’s partnerships. They are proud to offer a special limited edition cannabis menu for this production that will be delivered on site between 6 and 7:30 pm and between 12:30 and 2 pm. on the Sunday matinee. Participants must create a profile on the Arts Asylum website before placing a marijuana order and must be placed by 3 pm on the day of the show (10 am on Sunday).
This immersive event will also feature a Timeless Reefer Den for your enjoyment and safe place in the parking lot, open from one hour prior to curtain through intermission. Arts Asylum encourages audiences to feel free to come dressed in your 1937 best or 2024 best and walk the green carpet prior to entry. All smoking and or vaping must take place outside and non-alcoholic drinks and snacks will be available for sale inside the venue.
The Arts Asylum prides itself on working with artists to enrich the community. Affordable rates are offered to give artists a place to create and share. Through an ongoing capital campaign the Arts Asylum will have a new lobby renovation and transformation to be completed by this time next year.
Reefer Madness runs September 26th through October 5th. Tickets are $30 and can be ordered through their website at www.theartsasylum.org . The evening performances start at 7:30 and the Sunday matinee at 2 pm. Reservations are essential.
