A major improvement project along Tomahawk Creek Parkway, stretching from College Boulevard to 119th Street, will start Monday, Feb. 10. The work will improve safety and connectivity for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The planned improvements include:
- Roundabout Construction: Building a new roundabout at the intersection of Town Center Drive and Tomahawk Creek Parkway.
- Floodplain Adjustments: Raising sections of the road above the 100-year floodplain.
- Creek Channel Enhancements: Enhancing the creek channel to reduce flooding.
- Road Resurfacing: Resurfacing the roadway and pavement between 119th Street and Roe Avenue.
- Bike Lanes and Pedestrian Crossings: New bike lanes and improved pedestrian crossings will better connect the west side of the Parkway with the regional trail system.
- Fiber Optic Infrastructure: Extending the City’s fiber optic infrastructure to improve communications between city facilities.
Construction will be completed in phases, with traffic impacts evolving as the project progresses. Below are more details about these impacts:
Multiuse Trail Closure- Starting Monday, Feb.10:
- The multi-use trail along the creek (from College Boulevard to 119th Street) will be closed for approximately 8 weeks, starting Feb. 10. Pedestrians will be detoured to the sidewalk along the west side of the parkway, which will remain open while the trail is closed.
- Cyclists are encouraged to use alternate routes between College Boulevard and 119th Street. Signage with advanced notice will be placed along the trail, including a QR code linking Johnson County’s interactive bike route map for alternative routes. Alternative routes include Roe Avenue, Nall Avenue’s multi-use trail, or the Leawood South Bike Loop along Brookwood.

Tomahawk Creek Parkway Closure and Detours, starting Wednesday, Feb. 12:
- Tomahawk Creek Parkway will be fully closed at Town Center Drive for the roundabout construction work. Vehicles will be detoured to Roe Avenue at 115th Street and 119th Street. Weather permitting, this closure will begin Wednesday, Feb. 12, and continue until August.
- Additionally, Tomahawk Creek Parkway will be reduced to one lane in each direction from College Boulevard to 115th Street, with speeds reduced to 25 mph. Due to the closure, vehicles, and cyclists traveling this section will be routed to Roe Avenue. This reduced lane phase is expected to begin within a week following the Town Center Drive closure and continue until October.

Future Traffic Shifts:
- In August, the roundabout will open, and Tomahawk Creek Parkway will close between the condominium entrance and 115th Street.
- As work progresses, additional traffic changes will be communicated in advance.
Project Timeline:
- Start Date: Feb.10, 2025
- Road Open to Traffic: October 2025
- Project Completion: December 2025
- All dates are weather-dependent and subject to change. As construction starts, more detailed updates will be provided.
